The sUAS Operator Boot Camp is an immersive, five-day training program that provides participants with a hands-on experience in building and operating small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS). Throughout the course, participants will work with individual components to construct a fully functional drone. In addition to building skills, participants will learn about drone design and construction, COTs component sourcing, Pixhawk, flight characteristics, FAA rules and regulations, unique payloads, autonomous flight, ground control stations, FPV line of sight flight, and more. Our experienced instructors will guide participants through the construction process, and provide practical instruction on safe and effective drone operation. The final day of the course is dedicated to flying, allowing participants to test their newly acquired skills. Whether you're a novice or an experienced drone operator, the sUAS Operator Boot Camp offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and a comprehensive understanding of sUAS technology and operation.

Students discover the functionality of all the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components while building their own quadcopter and learn where to source new parts for future projects. On the final day, students practice safe flight of their sUAS and how to operate the ground control station (GCS) effectively while learning and abiding by appropriate FAA laws. The course concludes with a handful of contrived flight scenarios intended to test the knowledge and skills learned throughout the week of instruction.

Learn about all the Learning Objectives of an Innovation Boot Camp!

Students will receive an NDAA-compliant sUAS kit comprised of the following:

  • Understand the fundamentals of drone design and construction, including knowledge of the key components such as motors, propellers, and frame materials.

  • Gain practical knowledge in COTs components sourcing (technical forging) for building custom drones.

  • Learn how to use the Pixhawk autopilot system for advanced flight control.

  • Develop skills in managing the flight characteristics of a drone, including controlling speed, altitude, and maneuverability.

  • Acquire knowledge of FAA rules and regulations for sUAS operation, including registration, flight restrictions, and safety guidelines.

  • Explore the unique payloads that can be attached to sUAS, such as cameras, sensors, and other specialized equipment.

  • Develop skills in autonomous flight programming using open-source software such as Mission Planner and QGroundControl.

  • Learn how to set up and operate ground control stations for sUAS operation, including live telemetry and video feeds.

  • Develop proficiency in FPV (first-person view) line-of-sight flying for real-time situational awareness.

  • Gain hands-on experience with a range of sUAS platforms and configurations, culminating in a final project that demonstrates mastery of the course material.

  • Understand the principles of wireless communications as they relate to sUAS, including how to configure and troubleshoot radio links between the drone and ground control station.

  • Learn how to use GPS and other positioning systems to enable advanced features such as waypoint navigation and geofencing.

  • Develop knowledge of power systems and battery management for sUAS, including selection of appropriate battery types and charging methods.

  • Explore the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the use of sUAS for commercial and personal applications.

  • Gain proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosing common problems that arise during sUAS operation, such as GPS signal loss, motor failure, and sensor errors.
